The 4 Cardinal Virtues of Greek Philosophy (Christianity later borrowed) for deep fulfillment.

9/4/2020

The idea of virtue and its role in ethical behavior comes from ancient Greek philosophy. Plato, identified four virtues that have become influential concepts in Western civilization. Now known as the four cardinal virtues, they are wisdom, courage, temperance and justice. He wrote about these virtues in the "Republic," a Socratic dialogue on political theory. Some philosophers have argued that the four virtues provide the basis for all aspects of moral character. Aristotle, a student of Plato, expanded the concept by including additional virtues, as did Christian theologians.

The ancient Greek concept of ‘OikeioSis’ can save us.

Our topic today: Earth-Stewardship concept from Greek Philosophy.

In Stoic ethics, oikeiôsis (Ancient Greek: οἰκείωσις, Latin: conciliatio) is a technical term often translated as "familiarization," "affinity," "affiliation," and "endearment".

Oikeiôsis signifies the perception of something as one’s own, as belonging to oneself (ie the Earth, people as one family).

The theory of oikeiôsis can be traced back to the work of the first Stoic philosopher, Zeno . Later, the Stoic philosopher Hierocles saw it as the basis for human ethical action. According to Porphyry, "those who followed Zeno stated that oikeiôsis is the beginning of justice"; A just society, as good 'Earth-stewards' of our home planet.

"OIKEIOSIS"

Oikeiôsis is rooted in the word oikos (οἶκος). Oikos is the word for household, house, or family, and can be seen in modern English words like economics and ecology (Greek oiko- to Classical Latin 'oeco'- to Medieval Latin eco-). Similarly, the term Oikeiotes denotes the sense of belonging, the opposite of alienation. The term invokes the sense of being "at home", of belonging to and by extension becoming "familiarized" with something (especially life on planet Earth). ie TO BECOME GOOD CARETAKERS of EARTH, sense of LOVE. and RESPONSIBILITY.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca, known simply as Seneca (or Seneca the Younger), was a stoic philosopher and rhetorician. He’s one of the first stoics for which there are considerable literary remains for us to study.
Born over 2,000 years ago in Spain as the son of Seneca the Elder, Seneca had a mixed reputation.
On one hand, we have his writings, which were both practical and timeless. Using a search for wisdom to navigate the inevitable ups and downs of life, he could be considered a practical philosopher. His thoughts influenced historical figures such as Pascal, Francis Bacon, and Montaigne, and continue to resonate with people today. Nassim Taleb went so far as to write an entire chapter on Seneca in his book AntiFragile.
“We are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not Ill-supplied but wasteful of it.”— Seneca
“Time discovers truth.” — Seneca
“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.” — Seneca
“Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.” — Seneca
“We are more often frightened than hurt; and we suffer more from imagination than from reality.” — Seneca
“A gift consists not in what is done or given, but in the intention of the giver or doer.” — Seneca
“All cruelty springs from weakness.” — Seneca
“As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.” — Seneca
“If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favorable.” — Seneca
“He suffers more than necessary, who suffers before it is necessary.” — Seneca
“Timendi causa est nescire — Ignorance is the cause of fear.” — Seneca
“It does not matter what you bear, but how you bear it.” — Seneca
“The man who has anticipated the coming of troubles takes away their power when they arrive.” — Seneca
“The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.” — Seneca

"AMOR FATI" LOVING YOUR LIFE

5/4/2020

Amor fati ( lit. "love of fate") is a Latin phrase that may be translated as "love of fate" or "love of one's fate". It is used to describe an attitude in which one sees everything that happens in one's life, including suffering and loss, as good or, at the very least, necessary.
