Ethos, should be the first filter any decision we make needs to pass through.
It is our character - our only true possession. Your Ethos, apart from personally empowering you, will also make you more trustworthy, gain you a better reputation, an invaluable commodity in business and personal relations. A leader with Ethos will attract the best people into his/her business, the business will gain a better reputation, better partners and, everything else being equal, more clients. This will drive others to do the same, in order to compete, which will improve the economy on the whole, to the benefit of everyone. Ethos will create a healthier overall environment wherever it’s applied; a beneficial rising tide that sweeps through our society, lifting everyone up. Virtue (Greek: Areté), the cornerstone of Ethos, is not therefore an abstract term for philosophy, but a very concrete aspect of our personal happiness, freedom and fulfillment. We should be ethical, not only because it’s the ‘right thing’ to do, but for purely selfish reasons. It benefits us and our well being. Ethos is so important because it becomes the backbone of our character, an experience of our Self in our most empowered state. It provides us with an armour to fight off fear and doubt. It gives us strength, purpose and direction, which are the most empowering traits one can have. Without it, we are a ship without a compass. As Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor and devout student of Greek philosophy wrote 2,000 years ago: “No matter what anyone says or does, my task is to be good. Like gold or emerald or purple repeating to itself, ‘No matter what anyone says or does, my task is to be emerald, my colour undiminished.’”
