Are you lonely? Be honest with yourself…
Loneliness has become such a problem in the United Kingdom (UK) that the country now has a Minister of Loneliness. While ‘Minister of Loneliness’ may sound like a new song or a character out of George Orwell’s distopia in “1984” , it is a real new position addressing a real increasing problem worldwide. On Wednesday, January 17, of this year British Prime Minister Theresa May, announced the creation of this new position. May stated, "For far too many people, loneliness is the sad reality of modern life." The announcement cited the statistic that more than 9 million people always or often feel lonely in the UK. The UK are not alone in feeling lonely. In a Harvard Business Review article, the 19th Surgeon General of the United States Vivek Murthy, wrote that "Loneliness is a growing health epidemic. We live in the most technologically connected age in the history of civilization, yet rates of loneliness have doubled since the 1980s." He continued by saying that "Today, over 40% of adults in America report feeling lonely, and research suggests that the real number may well be higher." What did the ancient Greek philosophers have to say about loneliness? See this episode of 'alkistisTV' and write your comments. Alkistis PS.
