The Greek symposium was a key Hellenic social institution. It was a forum for debating, plotting, boasting, or simply reveling with others. Symposia were also held by aristocrats to celebrate special occasions, such as victories in athletic and poetic contests. They were a source of pride for those who held them.

Food and wine were served, in a relaxed, casual atmosphere, along with entertainment such as games, songs, and various performing acts.
